چکیده

We have investigated U-Pb discordance and oxygen isotopic composition of zircon using high– spatial resolution !O measurement by ion microprobe. !O in both concordant and discordant zircon grains provides an indication of the relationship between fluid interaction and discordance. Our results suggest that three characteristics of zircon are interrelated: (1) U-Pb systematics and concomitant age discordance, (2) !O and the water-rock interactions implied therein, and (3) zircon texture, as revealed by cathodoluminescence and BSE imaging. A key observation is that U-Pb–disturbed zircons are often also variably depleted in O, but the relationship between discordance and !O is not systematic. !O values of discordant zircons are generally lighter but irregular in their distribution. Textural differences between zircon grains can be correlated with both U-Pb discordance and !O. Discordant grains exhibit either a recrystallized, fractured, or strongly zoned CL texture, and are characteristic of O depletion. We interpret this to be a result of metamictization, leading to destruction of the zircon lattice and an increased susceptibility to lead loss. Conversely, grains that are concordant have less-expressed zoning and a smoother CL texture and are enriched in O. From this it is apparent that various stages of water-rock interaction, as evidenced by systematic variations in !O, leave their imprint on both the texture and U-Pb systematics of zircon. U^Pb isotopic behaviour of zircon during upper-amphibolite facies £uid in¢ltration in the Napier Complex, east Antarctica

Understanding the factors that contribute to U^Pb discordance in zircon is essential for interpreting isotopic data and for assessing the validity of concordia intercept ages. Modification caused by interaction with metamorphic fluids is often cited as a primary means by which significant or even complete isotopic resetting of U^Pb systematics in zircon might be achieved under subsolidus condit...

Zircon age and oxygen isotopic correlations between Bouse Formation tephra and the Lawlor Tuff

The Bouse Formation in the lower Colorado River trough holds an important record of the onset of the modern drainage patterns in the southwestern United States. It comprises calcareous and clastic infi ll deposited during fl ooding of several basins, including the Bristol and Blythe subbasins of Lake Bouse. An intercalated ash bed, which is key to constraining its depositional age, is exposed i...

Nanogeochronology of discordant zircon measured by atom probe microscopy of Pb-enriched dislocation loops

Isotopic discordance is a common feature in zircon that can lead to an erroneous age determination, and it is attributed to the mobilization and escape of radiogenic Pb during its post-crystallization geological evolution. The degree of isotopic discordance measured at analytical scales of ~10 μm often differs among adjacent analysis locations, indicating heterogeneous distributions of Pb at sh...

U–Pb isotopic study of relict zircon inclusions recovered from Muong Nong-type tektites

Isotopic compositions of U and Pb were determined for relict zircon inclusions recovered from Muong Nong-type tektites from the Australasian and North American strewn fields. These inclusions are generally opaque white with granular textures, probably representing mechanical disaggregation and/or local melting and recrystallization. All zircons have strongly discordant U–Pb isotopic ratios and ...

Zircon U–Pb chemical abrasion (bCA-TIMSQ) method: Combined annealing and multi-step partial dissolution analysis for improved precision and accuracy of zircon ages

A long-standing goal in high-precision and high-accuracy U–Pb zircon geochronology is the total elimination of discordance caused by Pb loss. In theory, this is fairly straightforward, but in reality it has proven extremely difficult to attain (or even demonstrate attainment of) this goal. However, a new method, bCA (Chemical Abrasion)-TIMSQ, is capable of completely removing zircon domains tha...
